Importance of Regular Assignment Solving

How "Regular Assignment Solving" works ?

In Indian education system students, parents & teachers are obsessed with numbers, whether its in form of percentage of marks (or grade) scored in exams or class rank. In this competitive environment after 12th class student is tested for entire syllabi of 2 years in form competitive exam. Again student ends up with a number (an All India Rank in some competitive exam)which determines career options which will be available to the student. But in this game of numbers we often overlook the source of real learning and improvement. We neglect what actually goes in building a "great number".

Behind every great number (whether its 90%+ marks in board exam or a great AIR in JEE Advanced or JEE Main) there is a systematic and regular effort of the student. This effort is done by student in form of "REGULAR ASSIGNMENT SOLVING". How this process works :
  1. While preparing for competitive exam student learns new concepts and applications each day.
  2. Student needs to get friendly with these concepts and applications. So teacher gives assignment which target that particular part of the topic which has been just taught in class.
  3. Solving this assignment on same day or very next day makes concepts crystal clear in mind and paves way for further learning.
  4. There may be some questions which student is unable to solve. Students are advised to give their level best (4-5 tries) in trying those questions. May be after couple of tries they are able to solve those questions too.
  5. But still there may be some questions which student is unable to solve even after best efforts.
  6. Now in next class teacher takes up discussion of this assignment. Each student is encouraged to clear all conceptual and application level problems they are facing in questions of the assignment.
  7. Teacher solves these problematic questions on board and discusses them in detail. Since students have attempted the question they realize what mistake they had committed while solving. They actually get deeper understanding of the concept and application.
  8. This process continues for almost two years and finally student masters entire two year syllabi bit by bit.
  9. Here I would like to state that discussion on questions take almost 70% of the class time during two years of preparation.
* Note : This is how I, as a Physics Teacher take up assignment discussion in class. Other teachers may follow variation of this but process is more or less same.

I hope parents & student will realize that "regular assignment solving" is most important part of learning. Coming to class without solving assignment is like "going to well and coming back without drinking water"
